Certificate in English to Spanish Translation Studies Courses

Each module in this non-credit certificate program runs for 5 weeks and includes 20 hours of instruction. Upon completion of Introduction to Translation Studies and Spanish Composition, students may take the remaining four courses in any order.

Students will gain an understanding of the translation process and learn about the various fields to render a professional translation from English to Spanish including legal, financial, medical, advertisement and textbook publications.

This course is conducted in Spanish and will cover advanced written composition, advanced vocabulary and idiomatic expressions. Students will learn grammatical matters such as punctuation, Spanish spelling, the art of writing and various writing techniques.

This course is a continuation of Introduction to Translation Studies. Students will continue work on legal, financial, medical, advertisement and other texts. The expectation is that students will be able to use knowledge gained so far to produce higher quality translations.

This course will teach students how to complete a single translation project and present a professional translation from English to Spanish. Students will also review translation theory through several essays by authors such as Cicero, St. Jerome, Ortega y Gasset, Rabassa and Venuti.

Students will learn Spanish proofreading and editing techniques. Practice exercises will be given to help students recognize and correct errors including spelling, punctuation, capitalization, formatting, word divisions and accuracy of translations. Students gain an understanding of copyediting symbols and how to refer to style manuals for assistance.

Students will gain an understanding of the translation process as it occurs in major translation agencies. This module will pay special attention to project management and quality control.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the English to Spanish Translation Studies certificate program, students will be prepared to render professional translations from English to Spanish in business, financial, legal, medical, marketing and literary fields. This certificate program provides thorough preparation for the American Translators Association (ATA) exam.

Using editing techniques preferred by professional translation agencies and other professional environments, students gain advanced writing, editing and quality control skills. Students who successfully complete the program can graduate confident in their knowledge of current techniques and procedures for producing accurate translations in the public and private sectors.

The six courses that comprise this non-credit certificate can be completed in six to eight months.
