College of Professional and Continuing Studies
Shayla graduated from Adelphi University with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice in 2016 and a master’s in emergency management in May 2019. While at Adelphi, Shayla was a prominent student leader and held various positions on campus, such as Relay for Life Tri-Chair, representative to the Board of Trustees, Momentum Planning Committee member and the Student Life Faculty Senate Committee. She was inducted into five honor societies, including the only national honor society for all Homeland Security Professionals.
While pursuing her master’s in emergency management, Shayla began her career as a consultant on the Nassau County Superstorm Sandy Long-Term Recovery Project in 2017. She has continued working in disaster recovery as an emergency manager. While holding various roles with Nassau County, she managed the recovery funds throughout the county for several federally declared disasters (over $2 billion). Shayla led and played a crucial role in streamlining the recovery process, establishing the first Disaster Cost Recovery Framework to be utilized by the two cities, three towns and 64 incorporated villages that comprise Nassau County. As a graduate student, Shayla participated in the Adelphi Alternative spring break to Puerto Rico to assist with the restoration of a local orphanage, school, mental health facility and non-profit organization devastated by Hurricane Maria. Today, Shayla continues to manage the day-to-day recovery operations of multiple federally declared disasters both for Nassau County and Stony Brook University Police Department.
