Frequently Asked Questions

A Master of Arts in Educational Technology opens doors across education, corporate training and the tech industry. Graduates go on to work in:

  • K-12 schools as tech integration specialists, instructional coaches or curriculum designers
  • Higher education, supporting online learning and course design
  • Corporate training and e-learning companies
  • HR corporate training
  • Healthcare systems
  • App development and publishing
  • Nonprofit and government education initiatives

Some alumni become instructional designers, educational technology directors or learning experience designers, while others might develop digital learning tools, manage online programs or consult on tech integration.

You don't need a master's degree to start teaching in New York, but you will need one to continue.

New York State issues an initial teaching certificate to candidates who complete an approved teacher preparation program and pass the required exams, which allows you to teach in public schools for up to five years.

To earn a professional certificate (the credential required for long-term teaching in New York), you must complete a master's degree from a regionally accredited institution that includes at least 12 graduate credit hours in your content area, along with three years of classroom experience.

Not directly. The MA in Educational Technology is not a teacher preparation program and doesn't lead to initial certification in New York. If you want to teach K-12 in New York and don't already have a certificate, you'll need to complete a separate teacher preparation program.

If you already hold an initial certificate, the degree fulfills the master's coursework requirement for your professional certificate and applies to most content areas (with the exception of the STEM pathway).

You can find more details on our professional certification page.

Students must meet the following requirements for admission to the program:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • Recommended minimum 3.0 cumulative undergraduate GPA on a four-point scale (strong candidates below this GPA are still encouraged to apply)

No previous teaching experience, classroom background or GRE/GMAT scores are required. The program welcomes applicants from a wide range of backgrounds, including teachers, instructional designers, career changers and recent graduates.

Visit the admissions page for a full list of application materials.

No. The MA in Educational Technology welcomes students from a wide range of backgrounds, including current K-12 teachers, higher education professionals, instructional designers, corporate trainers, career changers and recent graduates with no classroom experience.

For current teachers, the degree can count toward Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) hours and fulfills the graduate degree requirement for New York State professional certification.

For non-teachers, the program prepares you for careers in instructional design, corporate learning, higher education, e-learning and the broader EdTech industry.

While the degree absolutely supports K-12 and higher education careers, the skills it builds translate directly into corporate and industry settings. Instructional designers, learning experience designers and training and development managers are in high demand at companies, healthcare organizations, government agencies and the firms that build learning technology.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 11 percent growth for training and development specialists through 2034, and this is driven largely by demand outside traditional education.

If your goal is a career in corporate learning, e-learning development or EdTech product design, this degree prepares you for that work.

See our curriculum page for more information

Both tracks share a common foundation in teaching, learning and technology, but they prepare you for different types of roles.

  • The instructional design track focuses on learning experience design and the creation of effective educational materials. You will build skills in human-centered design, multimedia authoring, learning theory and curriculum development, with applications across both education and corporate training.
  • The educational technology track leans more technical, with coursework in web programming, computer networks, instructional technology infrastructure and free software.

You don't have to choose one or the other at admission. You can even choose to create your own track with the help of an academic advisor.
