Online Master of Social Work

MSW Practicum Placements

We Find Your Placements, You Focus on the Work

Over the course of the program, you’ll complete two placements totaling a minimum of 900 site-based hours at human service agencies near where you live. A dedicated coordinator handles the logistics so you can put your energy into the work.

Adelphi has spent more than 75 years building a network of 1,000+ agencies across New York, the country’s largest social services ecosystem, and that reach extends to students across the country.

Beyond site-based hours, students also complete professional development activities and a social action initiative each academic year as part of their practicum education.

Live Outside New York?

Our practicum coordinators regularly work with out-of-state students to find placement sites comparable to those in our New York network, within a 45-minute travel time from where you live.

Here’s What to Expect From the Placement Process

1

Your practicum placement starts with a conversation

Planning begins in your first semester. Your practicum coordinator will connect with you early to understand your location, your schedule and your professional goals.

Generalist year students are matched to their placement by the practicum team. Specialized year students have more input, with the opportunity to list up to three agencies.

2

We identify your options

Your coordinator draws on Adelphi’s network of 1,000+ affiliated agencies across the New York metro area, as well as comparable sites nationwide, to identify placements that fit your location and area of interest. All agency contact is handled by the Adelphi practicum team.

3

Your placement is secured

Once your placement is confirmed, a faculty practicum liaison is assigned to work with you and your agency throughout the placement. Their job is to make sure your experience meets the program’s educational objectives and that your classroom learning and agency work stay connected.

What You’ll Do in Your Practicums

“Generalist Year Placement (Minimum 450 Site-Based Hours)”

Your first placement focuses on developing foundational practice skills across a broad range of settings and populations. You’ll work directly with individuals, families, groups and communities, with assignments that may include:

  • Face-to-face interviews with clients individually and in group settings
  • Crisis assessment and case management
  • Community outreach and organizing
  • Program development and social action
  • Documentation and clinical record-keeping

“Specialized Year Placement (Minimum 450 Site-Based Hours”

Your second placement builds on your generalist experience with a focus on advanced direct practice with individuals, couples, families and small groups. You’ll take on more complex cases and develop the clinical skills you’ll carry into your career.

In your specialized year, you have more input into the placement process, with the opportunity to indicate preferences for up to three agencies through Adelphi’s practicum management system.

Planning for Your Practicum

Practicum placements take place in person at agencies during regular business hours, Monday through Friday.

This means you’ll need to plan for weekday availability, three days per week. All students complete 15 hours per week at their placement site. Placements run from September through June.

Some daytime weekday availability is required. This is important to factor into your plans before you begin the program. Most students travel no more than 45 minutes to reach their site. There are no remote placements.

“

Adelphi’s social work program came highly recommended… The faculty were very hands-on and passionate about social work. There are professors who really took me under their wing, and for that I am truly grateful.”

Frequently Asked Questions: Practicum Experience

The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) establishes the minimum standard for the number of hours required to complete the MSW. Adelphi meets or exceeds these requirements, with MSW students completing 900 site-based hours.

No. The practicum education office at the School of Social Work is responsible for assigning you to a practicum placement. Our practicum education program has long-standing relationships with social work agencies and is responsible for developing all placement sites. We maintain regular contact with agencies regarding student placements. If you want to be placed at a specific agency, submit your request in writing to the practicum education office in Garden City or at one of the off-campus centers. We’ll contact the agency to explore the feasibility of developing this placement.

No. However, there are a few competitive stipend internships available to second-year MSW students. Students who are employed in a human service setting may be eligible for employment-based practicum placement.

The practicum placement focuses on the development of advanced clinical skills and skills for the advanced direct practice with individuals, couples, families and small groups.

The best way to prepare is to attend the mandatory practicum education orientation. This orientation will provide you with the information you need to begin your practicum placement.

For most Online MSW students, practicums are not available in the summer. Practicum placements begin in the fall of their generalist year, and are completed alongside their required practice courses.

The exception is the Professional Advancement and Workforce Development track. Students in this track do start their practicum hours during the summer of their specialized year. We have more information about the Professional Advancement and Workforce Development track here.

No. The practicum education office will work with you to arrange an interview for a practicum placement at an agency that meets your learning needs. If the interview goes well and you and the agency agree that the placement is an appropriate fit, it will be confirmed. If either party has reservations, another interview will be arranged.

Yes. For many placements, a criminal background check is required. Fingerprinting, a physical and PPD (tuberculosis test) or other health requirements may be required. When possible, you will be notified about these requirements in advance. You’re responsible for paying any fees that agencies do not cover.

Any missed hours must be made up.

This type of placement is called an employment-based practicum placement and must be approved by the practicum education office. Approval of an employment-based practicum placement application depends on timely submission of the application and the integrity of the proposed practicum assignment. You must be employed for a minimum of six months in advance in order to be considered for employment-based practicum placement.

No. Hours that count toward licensure must be completed after receiving your MSW.

Yes. You’ll receive a grade of pass, incomplete or fail.

You’re expected to allow approximately 45 minutes of travel time to and from your practicum placement site. Every effort will be made to plan a reasonable commute.

Yes, but evening and/or weekend placements are very limited. Many agencies are either closed or do not have available supervision or suitable assignments during these hours. Typical placement days are Monday–Friday and take place during standard business hours.
