The Advanced Standing option for the Master’s of Social Work (MSW) degree program allows students with a BSW from an accredited social work program to finish their education and advance their careers at an accelerated pace. MSW students can complete the Advanced Standing program online or on campus in four semesters, part time, paying half the cost of a traditional MSW program.
The Advanced Standing program is CSWE-accredited, and offers the same benefits as Adelphi University’s Online Master of Social Work (MSW), including individualized instruction from dedicated faculty during mandatory live online sessions, and two required on-campus experiences at our Long Island campus.
In addition, Advanced Standing students will also complete field placements in the NYC area or near their own community. Adelphi is affiliated with more than 1,000 human services agencies throughout the New York metropolitan region, which enables us to arrange field placements in a variety of settings and in a variety of community settings. Regardless of where you live, our experienced faculty will work with New York State residents and out-of-state residents alike to find an optimal field work site.
Adelphi is proud to offer an Online MSW program that is both rigorous and flexible, with a curriculum taught by faculty who are experts in their field. The core curriculum provides knowledge, skills, values and ethics essential to all forms and levels of the generalist social work practice.
In order to qualify for the Advanced Standing program, applicants must have obtained a BSW undergraduate degree within the past five years from an institution accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Students who don’t meet the Advanced Standing requirements may still qualify for our traditional Online MSW program.

Nurturing productive one-on-one relationships is a vital part of any successful social work career. Our online MSW program ensures you have the chance to form personal connections with other students during on-campus visits, which are hosted twice annually at Adelphi’s main campus on Long Island. As part of these required in-person experiences, you’ll attend sessions in traditional classrooms and have lunch with your professors and peers.
Our intensive on-campus experiences take place in August and January, the week before the start of the Fall and Spring semesters, respectively.
Students attend classes from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. over the course of two to four days, always incorporating a weekend to accommodate full-time work schedules.
In light of the current public health crisis and the need to minimize interpersonal contact, Adelphi University has moved the learning experiences on the Long Island campus to a remote format through Fall 2021.
Beginning in January 2022, MSW students will have the option to attend virtual residencies, which will include opportunities to interact with peers and faculty. Students receive a virtual agenda prior to the residency. Current students may be granted permission to attend virtual residencies on a case-by-case basis.
