The coursework for each program incorporates current research, evidence-based knowledge and best practices, and aligns with the professional standards set forth by the Council for Exceptional Children.
All program graduates earn a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies from Adelphi University that appears on their transcript.
Graduates of the Advanced ASMD from New York State are recommended for the Education Department’s Annotation in Severe or Multiple Disabilities. No additional certification exams are required, but these students must apply for the annotation through the state’s TEACH website.
Graduates outside of New York should check with their state education department to find out how the Advanced ASMD may apply to certification extension requirements in their state.
The online advanced certificates in autism and severe or multiple disabilities can be completed in one year. These part-time programs comprise three 15-week semesters with two courses per semester.
The programs include both recorded and live elements, helping students set their own schedule.
Each advanced certificate comprises four courses. Students of the Advanced Certificate in Autism Spectrum Disorders program are not required to take courses in any specific order; however, students of the Advanced Certificate in Autism and Severe or Multiple Disabilities program must begin with EEC 680 – Introduction: Severe or Multiple Disabilities.

An introduction describing the range of cognitive, behavioral, social and academic issues of individuals with autism, Asperger Syndrome, and related disorders. Topics include: theories of cause and development, diagnosis, education and therapeutic interventions, psychosocial adjustment, IEP development, multi-disciplinary teams, and working with the family.
Students will learn about multi-disciplinary diagnostic approaches and interventions for autism spectrum disorders including autism, Asperger Syndrome, and pervasive developmental delays. Topics will include assessment protocols, scientifically based behavioral and developmental interventions such as ABA, TEACCH, Miller Method, Floortime, speech/language strategies, PECS, and other research based approaches.
Course expands knowledge of treatment models for individuals in the severe to moderate range of the autism spectrum and focuses on treatment needs throughout the lifespan. Course requires practicum experience. Candidates will present and review treatment modalities and case reports from field work.

Introduces severe or multiple disabilities resulting in intensive educational needs including instructional design, functional skills development, and related areas. Recommended practices for assessment, curriculum, and instructional methods will be reviewed, as well as legal mandates and ethical considerations. Meets New York State mandate in autism training.
This course provides prospective teachers of students with multiple and severe disabilities with basic knowledge of formal and informal assessment strategies for curriculum development, program design, instructional strategies, material development, community transition, functional programming across home, school, community, and vocational environments.
Addresses foundational knowledge concerning the learning characteristics of the student population, curriculum development, program design, instructional strategies, and community transition. Designing functional programming across home, school, community, and vocational environments to meet the needs of individual students will be the focus of this course. Field observation is required.
Upon completion of an autism certificate program, professionals such as special educators, general educators, related service providers, and school psychologists will be better prepared to work with individuals with autism spectrum disorders and/or severe or multiple disabilities in inclusive and specialized settings across the lifespan.
Both certificates lead to Adelphi certification. Students who complete the Advanced ASMD with either specialization will be recommended for the Annotation in Severe or Multiple Disabilities in the State New York. Completion of this certificate may also apply to extension requirements in other states.
